NEW YORK :
John Polhemus, Printer, 105} Nassau Street.
1878.
The long time which has elapsed since the last considerable sale of Ancient Coins leads us to hope for a large attendance at this one, more especially as the historical interest of the pieces, and the very fine state of preservation in which they are found, make the collection very in- teresting to a large number of persons, many of whom, although not regular coin collectors, would be pleased to have a few coins of Alex- ander the Great, Julius Caesar, Nero, and other historic personages'; while the “ tribute penny” of holy writ must be interesting to nearly every intelligent person. And when it is known that perfectly genuine and authentic coins, nearly two thousand years old, can be had for about, double their silver value, there certainly must be many persons who will embrace the opportunity of possessing a few specimens.
For the guidance of amateurs, we have had a number of fine coins photographed, to show both obverse and reverse, a plan which, we think, will be appreciated. These catalogues, with photographs, printed on heavy paper, can be had at a cost of 35 cents each.
We wish to call particular attention to the fact that the coins in this collection arc to be sold in the evening, instead of the afternoon, as usual. We have made this change for the convenience of gentle- men who are unable to attend auctions held in the day time, thereby giving all an opportunity of purchasing, and also of seeing what they buy. The coins will be on exhibition throughout the day in the salesroom.
In regard to the condition of the various pieces, we can assure intending purchasers at a distance that they have all been faithfully described, and in cases of the slightest doubt, the condition of the coins has, if anything, been rather under-estimated.
To the large number of new collectors to whom this Catalogue will be sent, and who have not yet commenced to purchase their coins at auction, we would say in regard to the selling, each lot will be knocked down to the highest bidder ; the lots are sold so much for each coin in it, so if you desire a lot of coins which contains ten, and you wish to pay $1.00 for it, your bid should be 10 cents, which would be $1.00 for the lot. Amateurs sending their bids in from a distance, should be very particular in regard to this. The Auctioneers, Messrs. Scott, and other dealers, will attend to the pur- chasing of any desired lots for parties unable to attend the sale, at a charge of 10 per cent. Always state your highest price, and rely on the honor of those you employ to make the purchases for you at as low a figure as possible.
After the sale, copies of this Catalogue can he had, neatly priced, for $1.00 post, free; or with photographs, $1.50. Orders should be sent in im- mediately .

COINAGES OF THE WORLD,
ANCIENT AND
MODERN.
This work is intended to give correct information on a subject of w tiich no educated person can afford to be ignorant; and yet, till the publication of this volume, it has been impossible to obtain a general knowledge of the Coinages of the World without reading through dozens oi heavy quartos, at great, loss of time, and probably heavy expense.
By the aid of this book, any person can at once determine the nationality of any coin they may possess, and obtain much interesting information concerning the cause which led to its issue. It is well tilled w ith beautifully executed representative coins of every people, age and country, and is the only comprehensive book on the subject ever published. The paper, press-work and binding are all of the very best. No library can be complete without it.
PRICE-CLOTH, $2.50. HALF MOROCCO, $3.50.
For sale by all booksellers, or will be sent, post free, on receipt of price, by the publishers,

The New York Times of December 27th, says :
“ What every student of Coinages — not the mere collector of old coins — wants to know.”
The New York World of November 2Jth, says:
“Welcome to all amateur and experienced numismatologists, to whom it will not only convey valuable information, but be useful as a work of reference.”
The New York Evening Post of November 29th, says :
“ A work of great interest to numismatists and collectors of coins. * * * The text, which
is full, is illustrated by several hundred engravings of the principal coins of all ages and countries.”
The New York Daily Graphic of December 23 d, says :
“ Shows a great deal of special study and painstaking research. It is a monograph full of interesting and curious information, and besides its ample learning, gives several hundred engravings of the principal coins. The various appendices to the volume add materially to its convenience and value for reference.”
The American Journal of Numismatics of January 1st, says ;
“ This is an octavo volume of 306 pages, with a large number of wood-cuts of examples of both ancient and modern coins. It has several appendices, giving lists of the French sovereigns, explanations of the abbreviations on Roman coins, a list of Roman families who have issued coins, and other matters of interest. The text is sufficiently elaborate to give the general reader a good idea of the subject, and to excite his interest in the science of numismatics. From the brief examination we have been able to give it, we judge it to be one of the most valuable and compendious books on coins, especially for those collectors who have not the time or inclination to consult the ponderous quartos of the old writers, which has yet appeared.”
The Coin Collector's Journal of January 1st, says :
“ This is decidedly the most important work on numismatics that has appeared during the past year, and will doubtless be the means of starting many new' collections, as it is written in popular style, and oc- cupies a field distinctly its own. The first chapter introduces us to the first coin, and we are gradually led from the coins of the Greek Island of ^Egina, to those of Athens, Corinth and Macedonia; from Miletus and Ephesus to Egypt and Judea; from Griecia Magna to Rome, and so dowrn through the Byzantine Empire to Mediaeval and modem Europe, including also Asia, Africa and America (the coins of our country and England being very fully described), giving fine engravings of all the principal types of each, till every coin-issuing State or Colony has been noticed; in fact, it is more than a coin book, it is a short history of the world, and should be in every house.”

In forwarding to our subscribers The Coin* Collector’s Journal for January, 1878, at the commencement of the third volume, we would take the opportunity of thanking our patrons for past favors, and urge them to continued exertions to increase the circulation of the Journal. As it is the largest numismatic monthly published in the United States, and as it has now attained a more extensive circulation than any other paper devoted to the interests of coin collectors, we think it is for the interest and advantage of subscribers to do something to increase its influence.
We would remind our friends that by increasing the circulation of the Journal, the number of collectors will doubtless be much increased, and, as the number of coins is limited, the ad- ditional demand will greatly enhance the value of all collections.
The publishers have never expected to realize any profit from the subscription list; all that th y hope for is to make the C. C. J. a self-sustaiuiug means of communication for coin col- lectors, and therefore feel justified in looking to those benefited by it to do something to add to its usefulness in the future.
